I’ve always had depression and anxiety but within the space of three months, I had a breakdown, was furloughed due to the pandemic, ended a relationship, and had to find a new place to live.
I’ve always considered myself to be high-functioning; especially when on the right medications and going to therapy. In February 2020, however, things came crashing down. I was in the midst of studying for the California teaching exams when I began having panic attacks. I found myself feeling undeniably sad, every day.
I also had a partially torn ligament in my ankle and, as a highly active person, this did not help matters. I began having my first ever suicidal thoughts and my therapist and I decided that I would stop studying so rigorously but unfortunately, that didn’t help. I was miserable.
In March of 2020, the situation surrounding the pandemic worsened and the preschool I worked at closed down. My boyfriend and I broke up and I decided to apply for jobs outside of education where I could begin to figure out what I wanted to do with my life; including becoming a certified personal trainer.
I also turned to a support system. I went to therapy, I spoke to my family constantly, and I tried to get myself out of the house as much as possible to breathe some fresh air. I also turned to exercise. Since moving on, I have found that I am more resilient than I ever thought possible. I know that one day everything will fall into place. I think it’s about trying to take it one day at a time. Figure out your challenges only for that day, and tackle those specific challenges.
