Describe the situation where you had to be resilient:

I had two very serious accidents happen to me in my mid-20’s consecutively, one where I was left immobile. It seemed like my life was quickly spiralling from worse to worse. I learnt the power of resilience when I found my spiritual teacher.

Yogi’s Story:

After suffering several severe injuries due to an accident I had in my mid-twenties during a land snow slide, I was very badly injured. I dislocated my shoulder, broke my ribs, knee and had a bad ankle injury. Having been an active yogi in my 20’s, to being almost immobile, I went through an emotional disaster during that time. Because of my state of mind at that point, I was not wholly mindful of my actions during the night, and I accidentally drank something corrosive in my home. It badly burnt my stomach and esophagus as well as my mouth.

Not only was I externally broken, but internally too. It seemed like my life was quickly spiralling down. I had no strength to know how I could better myself at this point, not knowing which part of my body to try to heal first. I felt very helpless and uncomfortable. I was emotionally hypersensitive and was having outbreaks of uncontrollable anger, isolating myself from friends and family.

A little while after, I found my teacher. He was sent to me just at the right time, and I am forever grateful that he helped my find my inner strength to cope with what I was going through. I learned how to allow myself to be in peace and be happy in life, despite what was happening.

My entire perspective of life changed. I became aligned to know how to find peace in this crazy world and how to become spiritually aligned to live a balanced life. I built back my physical strength with Yoga therapy; it took time, but it is a steady process. Then I saw my mental health improve, and I realized my passion for my spiritual teachings and holistic medicine, which were the tools I had to heal for myself. I felt inspired in life once again, but this time to become someone who is here to help others when they are going through dark times. Sometimes it is all too easy to fall into the victim mindset after accidents like what I had, but if you have a teacher or a guide to support and empower you to improve, you can pull yourself out of a dark place.

Now I am armed with in-depth knowledge of Yoga, holistic medicine, and Ayurveda health. These are my instruments. I now help people who come to me for help. I have never felt more in alignment with my soul purpose as I am now.

How did you practice resilience when faced with this challenge?

I wanted to give up many times. My body was in pain and my mind was weak. I didn’t believe I would be able to practise Yoga again. But I found power in my weaknesses and that was my resilience. The accident was to become my story to help others.

Please share one piece of advice for people who are going through a similar challenge:

You can overcome life’s challenges. They are stepping stones to a new, better, and purposeful life for you if you don’t rush the process of healing.
