This is Maria Berglund and she is RESILIENT.

CONTENT WARNING: The I Am Resilient Project provides an open space for people to share their personal experiences. Some content in this post and on this website will include topics that you may find difficult.

Describe the situation where you had to be resilient:

I overcame a rough childhood of emotional abuse.

Maria’s Story:

I chose to get myself out of the situation I was in by doing well in school, and build a life I wanted, rather than falling into the negativity I was raised in.

Also, I am originally from Victoria, BC. I moved down to Portland in 2013. Living in the US and having two of my three children here is part of the reason why I started my nonprofit. Healthcare is so expensive. I wanted a way to help moms, and give back. I’m so grateful to services supporting mothers and children as my mom relied on those a lot when my sister and I were young. I’m paying that kindness forward with In Kind. I hope what we do inspires others to do the same.

How did you practice resilience when faced with this challenge?

I chose myself. I chose to be positive, and fight for a life I wanted and deserve. I knew I deserved better.

Please share one piece of advice for people who are going through a similar challenge:

You have the power to choose your mindset. Let yourself choose you. It’s ok to want better.
