This is T and she is RESILIENT.
CONTENT WARNING: The I Am Resilient Project provides an open space for people to share their personal experiences. Some content in this post and on this website will include topics that you may find difficult.
Describe the situation where you had to be resilient:
My father passed away in an accident and I had to pause school and then be on autopilot mode in order to complete my studies.
T’s Story:
I picked up a call on an early morning while I was still thick with sleep. It was a call with a death notification from overseas, regarding my father. He had passed away in an accident that has been difficult to fathom to this day how sudden it came.
I was shocked and could not believe that he was actually dead. I was in denial and then acceptance that he was injured. I hopped on the plane as soon as I could book a ticket.
There was a three days delay and I had thought the whole time my father was in critical condition but I found out from my family upon arrival, that he actually passed away during the first evening he was admitted to the hospital.
I cried, grieved, was angry, frustrated, extremely hurt, and confused.
I was filled with regrets of “I should have known” or “I should haves” I felt a lot of self-blame for a death that I did not create. I went numb and through a phase thereafter, of telling myself to push through no matter what.
How did you practice resilience when faced with this challenge?
Going numb, for some reason, helped me cope as I pushed through school and did everything I could to “just deal with it.” I also kept busy.
Please share one piece of advice for people who are going through a similar challenge:
Death can come at any time. We enter the same and exit the same, in different capacities. Not forgotten, but we can overcome with time – this is certain.
