CONTENT WARNING: The I Am Resilient Project provides an open space for people to share their personal experiences. Some content in this post and on this website will include topics that you may find difficult.
Describe the situation where you had to be resilient:
I was abused by my stepfather, a female neighbor, inappropriately touched by my grandfather at 16 years old and raped at 19 years old.
Shree’s Story
I felt hopeless, voiceless, lost, confused and unworthy. I reacted in my different ways: questioned my worth, promiscuous, found refuge in school. I earned the following degrees B.A- History, M.A- Special Education, Ed.S.- Administration and Supervision, Ed.D- Curriculum and Instruction; completed the Public Education Leadership Project at Harvard University.
I thought outside accomplishments fixed inside hurts. I forgave my stepfather and had the opportunity to let him know- face to face. Considering healing is a journey, I cope by sharing my truth though my book Resilient Walker, as a motivational speaker to empowering others, professional help- counseling, exercise and embracing my spiritual beliefs.
How did you practice resilience when faced with this challenge?
Resilience is a state of being that is always evolving. I practice resilience by walking in my truth, using my voice to help others, forgiving others, forgiving myself, believing in the possibilities and sometimes convincing myself of the truth.
